The aerial on my 1995 E200 has stopped going up and down despite the fact that the motor can be heard working.

The problem began last week when the car was frosted up and the aerial went up as per normal when turning the ignition. When turning the ignition off the aerial only went part way down.

The aerial itself can be moved up and down manually without any problem.

Thoughts/suggestions please!

Thanks,

Keith

You either need a new mast (£19 at a dealer) or the peg in the drive cog has failed. That means a new aerial unless you can order a cog from Hirschmann

Is there any kind of preventative maintenance I can carry out on my aerial to keep it working nice and smooth?

Would a bit of WD40 along the mast every now and then be enough? Don't fancy shelling out on a new one!

Try the wd 40 or a silicone spray.Better to spray on a sponge or rag and run this up and down. I found that it works with my aerial. I think as Nick and Malcolm that something may have come apart inside motor, however I have had similar symptoms and had it operating smoothly again. Have a look at the stems to see if they are straight. If they are not apply gentle and evenly distributed pressure with your hands to straighten.

Keep the mast clean, never oil as this gets onto the nylon cord, as Aussie Nick wipe the mast with WD40 or better still some PTFE or Silicon, do not get it too wet

I Never used any form of lubricant as this can only serve to attract and trap dirt. I don't have ariels any more, but when I did, I used to clean the mast with a paper towel, wiping upwards only. then run it up and down a few times and do it again. Wipe it until its clean and shiny. I did this every 4 weeks or so and I've never had an ariel mast jam.

No smutty comments now....! :)
