Just had our W124 E280 estate serviced at Star Motors in Caversham, and they've called to say it's ready, and informed me that the exhaust back box is looking pretty rough, and needs replacement. Won't pass MOT which is next item on my agenda.

Apart from rusty fittings, is there anything to put me off buying one and fitting it myself? My Haynes manual is a bit vague about it.

Euro Car Parts have a choice of replacements for £71 and £81.

Anyone done this job recently?

Thanks,
Larry

Hi Larry, the back boxes are not too bad to get off, just remember not to damage the pipe that it slides onto at any cost, you could saw the old one off, then remove the bit of pipe

Thanks Malcolm,

Had a quick look under there yesterday. Very small hole in the silencer near where the pipe goes in. Connection of pipe to silencer quite rusty while the rest of it looks fine. Will have a closer look today. Getting it off without damaging the pipe would be the hard part.

Take the centre box off with the back box, you will find it easier to split them while they are on a bench or something. Three bolts joint the pipes together, usually 13mm.

Hi,
As Television says make sure you don,t damage the rest of the exhaust in taking it off and make sure the box is properly aligned and does,nt vibrate against the bodywork when fitting.
