That wouldn't work of the valve or sensor was faulty as they would just counteract the increased weight.

Just to bring this thread back to life, am about to pull the pin on a 1990 200TE, he says it just has standard suspension and not self levelling, can anyone clarify?

Self levelling rear suspension was standard on estates. Dunno if they could be specced without it, i'd have thought it's more likely the seller is either mistaken as it's far more subtle than a Citroen or someone was too cheap to fix rotten hydraulic lines etc

Hes not an expert, doubtless bouncing it up and down might reveal any shortcomings, thanks

Said 200TE collected, 850 miles driven in it over 4 days, when it had only done 800 in previous 6 months.

The car was loaded with my refurbed 1955 Lancia Aurelia's V6 engine, 3 bumpers, most of an interior, 3 crates of parts, a steel wheel, 2/3rds of a 190 exhaust, set of mats, roof rails, 4 tyres and 5/6 assorted bags!!

It felt ok on the 260 miles last leg, on checking the reservoir, the fluid was pretty dark looking and only about 2 inches of it, is it easy to change, where best to get fluid? Any instructions/tips?

The spec. might be on the reservoir or its lid. MB or Febi. It could be the 345.0 spec, from memory.

If it's not leaking, a low level can point to the spheres' membranes having ruptured, thereby increasing the volume so the level falls. That will give a harsher ride.
Undoing their unions is the hardest part. Fluid change itself is easy.

It's ZHM hydraulic oil, dunno about today but MB used to be cheaper than many of the usual suspects and only a touch more expensive than the cheapest aftermarket sources. About a tenner/litre give or take and the system capacity is ~ 2 litres in total

New oil is clear/very pale yellow, as said (leaks aside) the level drops [strike]if[/strike] when the nitrogen escapes from the spheres. Dying/dead spheres won't stop it from self levelling or coping with loads of weight, they just result in less to zero damping and a hard/bouncy ride that's more noticable when unladen

http://www.w124performance.com/service/Index/Groups/32ShocksSprings.htm covers how the SLS system works and various jobs on both 201s and 124s but maybe not much on the pump arrangement on yours as the Septics never got the smaller 4 pot petrol? In either case the cliff notes are basically that the engine driven pump sends fluid around the system whenever the engine is running. The SLS valve is 'driven' via a linkage connected to the rear antiroll bar and diverts fluid either to the struts (to raise the back) or back to the resevoir- return line goes into the cap which contains the filter

230TE rear of car very low

Have a problem on my 1986 W124 230TE as rear is very low and will not lift. Have checked for leaks and also oil level in tank is ok. Could it be to defective shocks or the valve?
