Front wing has a rust arch; gfs do one for a remarkable £25, are they spot welded on like I've got a horrid feeling they are?

NO they are not spot welded on they are stuck on with silicone, If you go to your local DIY store you can buy the coloured silicone to match the colour of your car hope this helps.

Landover

(He does _try_ to be funny; we have to give him some credit. Shame to see all the energy go to wastethough.. soreeeee merky)

To be honest, I've not checked; Haynes manual tells me if I need to remove bonnet hinge this necessitates removal of font wing; something which "shold be entrusted" (I love that phrase, how little do they know..) to a MB dealer. Thats what led me to believe they are welded on.

I take it you are refering to me? If you are what do you see so funny?

They're bolted on (I've just had one of mine replaced on my W124). Like most things you only get what you pay for so I'd steer clear of the really cheap wings (unless anyone here can vouch for them) they tend to be lighter guage steel and sometimes there are problems with fit.

Could I just buy a wing from Eurocarparts and bolt it on then?

Would it have to be painted at some point?

Could it be painted prior to fitting?

I looked at the prices on Eurocarparts, the OE wings are about £125 but the cheap replacement ones are about £25...big difference.

Great the way old threads get dug up like this !!

Its at the doctors at the mo, but there's a body paintwork shop next to the garage + I'm gonna ask then to give me an idea on a cost to get rid of the rust on the arches and the word **** in capitals scratched on the passenger door + generally tidy it up a bit.

I'll let you know the outcome. However, the comittments comittee has started questioning the current budget run rate... keeps going on about it being too high.

LNM. Piece of cake to change wings, all bolted. Have some spare plastic body clips handy for the piece of trim at the bottom though, they usually break removing it (the trim).

My replacement wing cost £26 + VAT + carriage, total £35.55. It fitted perfectly. Don't know the supplier unfortunately, bought it through a local bodyshop at cost.

Make sure it is well primed/painted and waxoyled underneath before fitting.

Turnipsock, see above. You can paint it before fitting by all means, but you will realise this will entail much extra care in the fitting process. Remember the new paint takes several weeks to harden off properly so take care not to 'lean' on it at any stage.

Be aware the paint is quite expensive and the finishing lacquer even more so.

Cheers, Tom.

Thanks Tom. Good to know I can consider this as an option.

I'll probably ask the sprayshop guys about my options though it looks like the best option is to fit them myself and do all the work behind them, then let the paintshop finish them off.

They may not be to keen on this, but I could get them to sort out the rusty bit on my rear wheel arches as well.

Problem is, as I understand it, that it all needs to be blended in + the scratches are so bad on mine that it looks like the whole side of the car is involved. Hence my thoughts about getting the whole thing resprayed.

Turnipsock, I think yes this would probably be your best/most economical course. Spray finishing and lacquering is a highly skilled operation. You don't have to be an expert to prime, paint and underseal the back of the panel, it doesn't even have to be a match. The only part which would have to be a 'reasonable' match before fitting is the rear lip of the wing where it tucks behind the leading edge of the door. (Otherwise it means taking the door off and you don't want that!)

Now, I see you 'might think about having the rear wheel arches done too'. That's four very large corners of the car refinished and sparkling, and what's left? - Four relatively small door panels! Have a close look just above the top edge of the plastic trim panels on the doors, are they spotless? Do you see where I'm going? It will take the coachpainter less time and effort to prepare and refinish these panels also than to part-spray and 'cut-in' the old door finish to try to match all four wings with the rest - and no matter how good he is, he will NEVER obtain a 100% match, new paint with old. This is particularly the case with metallics.

Quite simply, how fussy are you? How nice do you want the car to look? How long do you intend to keep and enjoy it? Have you a few bob to spare? (Or are you a penniless peasant like me!) The choice is yours, and good luck!

LNM - for you too of course!

Cheers, Tom.
