Car will not start, I will be checking fuel pump and filter. On the bottom of the tank there is a grommet which is leaking but no smell of petrol???

When you turn on the ignition you should hear the pump running whilst priming the system for a few seconds,if it does run and stop,it is probably OK as that would indicate that it is pumping.

These fuel tanks develop leaks from where the filler pipe joins the body of the tank but if it is leaking you would obviously smell it.

What makes you think it is a fuel releted failure to start?

Unless the tank is empty of course!

You need to be more specific about which model you have got as there were several DIFFERENT engines and control systems.

Thanks for help, the car is a 1993 e220 auto. The fuel pump relay showed some sign of corrosion but I can hear it priming under the bonnet but no sign of life at fuel pump. How can I check 12v at pump since relay shuts off power when car is not running.

You could slacken the gland nut where the pipe from the tank goes into the fuel distributor and turn on the ignition where fuel should run out.

I do have the pin out to run without the relay, I will find it

Try to start it then take out a spark plug and see if there is any petrol on it.

You can also try turning over the engine, with the spark plug connected and grounded, to see if there is a spark (best done in low light and don't hold it with your hands)

Be very carefull in attempting repairs on both fuel and ignition systems simultaneously.
