W124 G/Box querie ?

Is it correct that I may actually have a four speed auto-gear box in my motor
As I'm sure it only seems to have 3 gears when driving it :lol:

Would anyone know how I might identify which gear box is fitted to my recently acquired Merc ?

A 92 (J plate) W124 series 300D automatic ( no idea if it's a fourmatic ? - whatever that is ? )

yes, you will have a four speed gearbox. the fact that it sets off in second gear may be confusing you though...

if you type in your vin no. here it will tell you things about your car, including which gearbox is fitted.

That car uses the 722.4 box if you want the other gear you use kick down, full throttle where 1st gear will be engaged

On a side note -

Why - Would they design it like this ?

Is it because there's soo much power that pulling away in first would be considered as devils play ( or )
Is it to save fuel

its so that it doesnt spin the wheels too much when trying to set off in bad conditions, snow etc. later 5 speed boxes have a switch to turn the facility on and off
