HI guys,

I wonder if you can hazard a guess as to what this noise might be.

I have a 300ce 1989 model (sportsline?). The autobox gives a rattle (like a spanner was dropped into it), when I start up from cold and only when I put it into Drive. ALSO the rattle can only be heard when stationary.

Once I drive away the noise goes away aswell. After a while the noise is not there even when stationary.

I am planning to change the filter and transmission oil soon...as I have a jerky engage of "drive" when I pull away.

Any advice and wisdom is appreciated greatly.

Forgive me for asking, are you sure the noise is coming from the gearbox, could it be external to the gearbox.

I assumed the noise is from the gearbox because it only starts when I shift the car from park to drive (when car is stationary). Do you think that it could be a external component (which is good news), such as exhaust heat shield?
