Hello,

I have a W124 E300 and the heater controls / gearshift dont light up.

I have traced the gearstick not lighting to the bulb, but cant work out why none of the switches (hazards, rear screen, heating controls) light up.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried rotating the mileometer knob in the cluster a few hard turns

Nope! Off out to try that now.

I did actually hunt for a "dimmer" switch as thats what it is like, but couldnt find one and didnt try the mileometer knob. Dash is at normal brightness, but I know some saabs have the "night" mode which turns off all lights apart from the speedo etc.

Will report back.

Does the '124 also have + and - buttons, Malcolm?

I recall they operate the rheostat on my '202.

Its the same on the 124 and no + & - button

After twiddling the knob pull off the heater control dials and check the bulbs. On the tvr you can turn ALL the lights off at night. Took me ages to suss that one out!

Been out turning the knobs on the speedo cluster - no difference. In fact, the cluster didnt even dim.

So looking like a wiring / fuse fault? Are there seperate fuses for the cabin lighting seperate to the fuses under the bonnet? The fuses are oldschool flat strips of wire.

this could be bulb failures or a fuse on the rear of the instrument cluster

The heater is the easiest to get to, thats depending on the heater control that you have,, push buttons or dials.

No other fuses for this

Its a 93K non-facelift 300D, it has the round wheel type controls.

I have had the lower dash in bits already so I`ll just do some more investigating.

I loved the fact that the wood is wood (well, ply!) on the consoles.
