When our 1995 manual W124 gets warm it occasionally jumps out of 2nd gear but frequently out of 3rd. If you are on the gas (lightly/hard does not matter) the can does not jump out of gear, as soon as you let off a little and get back on it jumps out, usually in traffic. The gear selection is smooth and precise in all gears with no noises. If you press against the gear knob even lightly it does not jump out of gear. When you move off in first the car occasionally surges forward or gently kangaroos like a learner driver!. I have checked the linkages are lubed ok, took the console out to have a look and all looks and feels in order. Any thoughts or pointers please. If i could add anything else i would say that there is a little bit of backlash with the prop felt in first gear. :???:

me too!

Hi,
I am having very similar problems with my 124 estate manual.. Fifth gear is the problem with mine and it behaves just the same as yours and from advice posted here and on other sites..Gears only jump out when they are worn and if the linkages are all ok then it is a gear box out job.. either a recon or fix the worn parts and service the beast.. I was also advised to replace the clutch while I am at it.. makes sense... hope this is some help

As Betorelli, its always worn gears, the teeth wear at a angle so that they push the gear out, in your case it is a complete rebuild im affraid, when it is only 5th there is a mod.

I have no knowledge of Merc manuals, but could it be the rubbers on the linkages?

When you take your foot off the gas, the engine and box move on their mounts as torque is transmitted back up the drivetrain (engine braking). Could this movement be enough to move the linkages enough to pop the gears out? (I am guessing along these lines as you say it's ok when held in place)

You could also try this procedure:
1) Sell car.
2) Buy a w124 automatic.
