Hello all

I'm seriously considering buying a W124/C124 - preferably a 320CE - and looking forward to inevitably getting to know my local specialist garage here on the south coast! It will add to my small stable of classics and be totally different to my MGB and 2CV van. I can spanner those easily enough - not sure about something as chunky as a Merc...

Multigrade Welcome . The guys that were bought up servicing , and repairing the W124, sorry to say are no longerr with us .But if there are any, they would have learned from their masters , and will be very thin on the ground by now. .
It will be a big help if you can find a good indy shop that knows about W124 anf fuel injection who can fix your problems thats if it is a petrol engine car that your looking for . Spare parts are getting harder to buy new,and very expensive second hand . I have had to buy parts that are second hand ,thats before i will buy any new parts from --- foo man choo .

Thank you guys for the welcome, looking forward to seeing / test driving a C124 this week. It's in smoke silver, not sure what colour that is from the photos. Quite excited...

There will be little on that you can't fix yourself if it's 102981 fuel inject straight 4 pot?(just noted it ain't....) Only thing I think cud trip u up is fuel inject system. If, and I stand to be corrected,? I am correct, that motor is pretty bomb proof. I believe it was basically same in my 230g. Sorry just re read ur lookin 320. So add 2 pots? Suspect much else the same tho?
At least you won't be sat on road looking to many electronic, emissions rubbish, visit workshop dramas simple happy motoring I think. Good luck

Oh, don't know about that, I'm dead on my feet :D
Only from the wallet down with that horribleS211 money pit draining it! :p

I thoroughly enjoyed working on and driving a friends 300E he bought new in 1986 and still looked no more than 3 years old in 2012. I occasionally get to service and repair a 500E and that always needs a good road test for the Mot.

Lucky barsteward.

My first MB was my W124, I got it brand new and it cost me a whopping 24k.

I would still have it if i was not so naive wrt car repairs and rust (at the time).

Said it a million times - -W124 were the last real merc. Engineered from the smallest screw upwards.

Look after it, keep it original.

Now that looks lovely.

What's on the to do list?
Thank you for the positive comments - I'm growing to like it too

As for the to-do list:
- Replace the a/c condenser - it leaks. Parts are on the way from Autodoc
- Fix the cruise control - doesn't work, no idea yet why. Some digging around to be done
- Replace the oil level sensor - it's giving intermittent false warnings
- soon replace the tyres: they're 7 years old and don't grip well in the wet
- er - I think that's it so far...

Autodoc didn't work for me, they seemed to have multiple websites with different names all relating back to 123 car parts. This was a year ago. The delivery date just seemed to go further and further into the future but they did refund my money as soon as I asked to cancel the order. Euro Car Parts were good - more expensive but delivery was fast.
