Does anyone have a "how to" guide for changing a radiator on a w124 e220. As the access to it is easy it looks like it shouldn't be too hard a job, however is there anything in particular likely to cause problems/difficulty?

Also the best quote I can get for a non A/C radiator for this car is £155 from eurocarparts. Are there any other sites I should check other than GSF and does that sound high? Car is a 1996 E220 Coupe without A/C, it seems weird to me that on eurocarparts the NON A/C radiator is a lot more expensive than the A/C radiator.

Many Thanks,

Ben

Thanks Malcolm,

VIN is 124042. Car has no electric fans as it has no A/C.

I've been told by a garage that the ATF is also cooled by the radiator. As the car will need the ATF done in 6000 miles will it be better to change the fluid by drainign it from the radiator connections whilst fitting the new rad?

The hard pipes that run from the oil cooler back towards the autobox rust quite nicely on most W124s. I'd budget for replacing those as well

Thanks Malcolm,

Think I could just about manage that job. Just trying to get the damn car to leak again now so I can confirm that it is a radiator and not a hose.

Is it possible it has just lost a lot of coolant through the overflow due to an airlock or something else? I only ask as its never lost anything, then suddenly over half a litre all over the drive upon starting looking like its coming from teh radiator area, and now cant get it to leak anything at all since.

Put your finger under the bottom hose where it joins onto the rad and see if is wet, do the top one as well

Tried the whole of the underneath of the radiator and all hoses and can't find any sign of dampness. Since topping up the level has not gone down either.

Only clue is that when it did leak it leaked onto the underside panel which is covered by the radiator, hoses, and also the front of the engine and waterpump just covers it.
