I have a late E300TD W124 Estate (1995) with a 606 diesel engine and automatic transmission; the car has done 161,352 miles and has a full service history, nearly all main dealer, including the last maintenance service in December.

The car has been standing for a couple of weeks, because I have been using my other W124 (it is manual, and easier to drive up hills on snow and ice than the automatic - I live in a mountanous part of Wales). I have noticed oil on the garage floor, and tracked this to a leak at what I think is the oil pressure sensor. Facing the front of the car, the leak is on the front right hand side of the engine, on the lower part, where an electrical connection pushes onto a pin, which protrudes from a concave oval plate fixed to the oil case by two bolts. I cannot tell whether the leak is from around the pin itself, or from a gasket under the oval plate, but the concave lower edge of the plate has oil on it, suggesting from around the pin connection.

If my description is sufficient, can anyone advise whether this is a large job to fix, and if so, does the oil have to be drained?

I have of course over 7.5l of new Castrol SLX oil in the car from the recent service, so do not want to waste this! It is hard to tell how much oil is actually leaking, since it runs onto the sump guard, then dribbles out onto the garage floor. I have not yet noticed a change on the dipstick level. There is a saucer sized oil patch on newspaper after 4-5 days.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi john, The sensors them selfs can become porous so it is properly best to replace it at the same time. The sensor has a rubber o-ring if i remember correctly so make you get one with the sensor.

You could clean it all up and run the engine a look exactly where its coming from to be sure.

Not hard to change sensor the two bolts is all there is, but you will lose some oil, but providing everything is clean, you can collect it in a clean container and pour it straight back in.

Thanks Ellsy,
Do you or anyone else know the number on the Russian site - I have not been able to find it. I assume that the plate must be unbolted to remove sensor and o ring, but I am cautious if this is an alloy structure, and not sure whether this is a DIY job. I do not want to end up with a bigger leak than I have already! With no independents nearby, it will be a return to the dealer.
Thanks
John

W124 Diesel: oil leak at oil level sender

I have now had chance to follow up on this leak on my W124 300TD, 606 engine. RE: Parts 90, 85, 80 and 95 at:http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp...SGR=120&SGN=04
The bolts are tight, and I think the leak is at the small sea ring (part 85), although could possibly be at the larger seal ring (part 95), and the oil is seeping round. After cleaning, the bottom edge of the concave plate of the sender unit (part 80) is wet with oil after a few hours.
I intend to order all 4 new parts and replace. I am assuming that since this is the oil level sender, then it is at the top of the oil case, and so I should not lose too much oil in removing the sender? Please advise if anyone has done this.
Thanks
John

Thats right John, there will be a small amount of oil leaking out, but if all is clean and a clean container to catch it in and it will ge back in.
