Hello

This is my first post

I bought a 1995 E280 estate about six weeks ago. I went to see it armed with information I'd gathered from this forum and I think I've done quite well as a result. It's certainly a splendid motor with a mere 158k miles on the clock. There are a couple of little things I'd like to sort out if I can afford to, hence the following:

I've got two keys, one opens the driver's door (and all the others via the central locking) and the other does the ignition. Neither of them do any of the other locks. My guess is that the boot and passenger door are probably the originals and the ignition and driver's door lock have been changed at different times in the past. Is there a way to confim this (eg are the locks numbered in some way)?

The steering wheel is rather worn and has been patched up with gaffer tape. Can you chage the wheel without changeing the airbag stuff?

Thanks in anticipation

Alf

Welcome,

I would agree with you about the locks being changed at some point, the barrels used to have a code on them, a lot to strip out though to find out,

The airbag is held to the sterring wheel with to torx bolts from behind, so its a easy job to replace just the steering wheel!!!

Thanks. What would I have to do then? I can imagine that I'd have to take the interior door trim off. Is that difficult (I'm not completely impractical, but am not the neatest or most patient)?

You don't need to take the door cards off to remove the lock barrels!
Just open door and on the side by the catch you will see a rubber blanking plug behind that is an allen screw. Remove that, put key in lock turn it and out will come lock/barrel unit.

Do I just need something to turn the whole unit, or do I actually need to the right key for the lock and to turn that as if I was unlocking the door? I haven't got the key you see.

Cheers

No you will need the correct key. Otherwise you will need to drill out the barrel and turn it to remove it.
However assuming it is original to the car. Mercedes will supply replacement keys if you take along V5 and proof of ID to a dealer

You release the allen key and turn the key in the lock 60 deg in the lock direction (top of key to rear of car) then the hexagonal end on the coupling rod aligns with a hole and you can pull the lock and barrel out, shame there's no stock in there.

If you dont have the key and are having difficulty drilling the lock (a likely situation) you can cut the die cast link rod from the lock barrel to the lock itself (door card off) and then the lock barrel will come out as soon as the allen screw is released, you will need a replacement of course so make sure you have one before you start to butcher it.
The block which carries the lock barrel holds the pull handle in place and must be there or you will loose the handle whilst driving.

My locks do not have any numbers on the barrels. I have done some "repairs" to my locks by taking them to bits and cleaning them up as a result I have avoided having to fork out on new parts yet and am not sure which parts (3off, barrel, block and coupling shaft) you get when MB supply replacements, can anybody enlighten me here?
I was quoted near 200 dabs for one of each: key, door and ignition barrels, hence the "repairs".
