W124 rear wiper problem

Hi, I have a very mundane but annoying problem. My rear wiper is stuck on intermittent. I can control its speed and the washer from the dash buttons but just cant get it to stop. I changed the relay in the rear of the car today but to no avail. Hope somebody can help me out.

The car in question is a 1992 w124 200te

The relay on the boot does the time delay, IIRC, and also switches the washer pump in time with the wiper

Assuming the switch is not faulty I'd suspect broken wires in the loom to the tailgate. They tend to break in the rubber boot that is clipped to the hinge
