I immediately noticed the inferior speakers fitted to my w124,
I have now :D happily fitted a pair of 6x9" speakers under the rear shelf, firing through the original holes, with no metal work cutting, just a custom made MDF panel and a pair of 5" speakers fitted snugly in the dash, , It works wonders, I actually have Bass and clear sound to boot.
Sure you can fit a subwoofer but that means an amplifier and lots more wiring. I used to fit car stereo's for a living a while back, this was fairly frustrating, but worth it in the end.. just like doing any DIY maintenance on these cars..

anyone else fitted non standard speakers on w124's ?

Yep I've done the fronts with some 4.25" infinities...I didnt think you could get 5's in there - interested to hear you can.

6X9's in the rear? hmmm I've never met an installer wo recomended 6X9's. They've always said go with separates. Glad to hear they work for you :)

Components only really for the front, 6x9's ok if you don't want to add a sub but want some bass.
MB's very poor for fitting good sounds into stock speaker locations(W124's and W201's anyway)

Anyone suggest a good replacement front speaker for a 93 200TE? Spike mentioned Infinitys, what model are they? Please help as I can't take the tinny sound of the factory fit ones much longer!!

Thanks

I think i put some 10cm Pioneer ones in. They are smaller than the MB ones, but fit and produce excellent sound. Cant remember the model, but wer about £25 for the pair..

Cheers

Hmm, how do you do that in a -85 W126 (380SE) car? The small "uphills" in the back shelf is so small, you can´t fit in any other speakers than the factory fitted, small, and strange sized speakers, which you don´t get hold of anywhere btw. Now, one of mine doesn´t work, and I would like to replace those with for example 6x9 for better sound. Do you guys think I need to take out my electrical saw, or can you fit them in somewhere else...? :) Thnx!

I always try looking for alternative placements before even thinking about cutting metal. And as nowadays security is always high on the list, it's a case of trying to use every original bit of trim and cover. not normally a good recipe for great sound, but good sound is better than no sound, after someone takes your stereo system. (had it happen to me before).

I would say look underneath the rear shelf is there a chance of fitting some MDF to the underside of the rear shelf and attaching a larger pair of speakers?

I always find some hot melt glue and or silicone sealant, will attach speakers securely, and stop those trim rattles..

I don't know much about the w126's i'm afraid..

Thnx nickh! Yes, I´m not planning to put in some highly-expensive stereo system (I´ve had a such one in a prev. car), but I´d like a bit larger speakers than the factory fitted 3" or 4" in the rear shelf. I´ll check it out, but I will certainly not do anything that will be noticeable in the interior.
