W124 Scorpion alarm fob problems

I have a 1994 220CE with the original Scorpion alarm. Both key fobs have become problematic as I need to click the open/close button 20+ times before it will unlock/lock the car. I had the problem a few months ago but it seemed to fix itself, but now it's back. Does anyone have any ideas for fixing this? I've replaced the key fob batteries but it made no difference.

best to open them if possible and check for bad soldered joint, I am not sure if new ones can be bought, but worth asking Scorpian
