I'm having my w124 e280 saloon converted to lpg next week and have decided to ditch the spare to fit the tank. I was thinking of trying to get a space saver spare that I could stand upright and strap to the rear wall of the boot. Would the difference in dia of such a tyre compared to the ones fitted on the car cause damage if i ever had to use it?

I'm not sure the rear axle would like the different diameter wheels.
Why don't you get a plug in compressor and some tyre foam, should get you home in most cases. Failing that, call the AA, RAC etc.

There are such things as collapsable space savers, that when inflated are the same diameter as the original tyres. I'm not sure if any newer Mercedes had them.
A normal spacesaver should be ok though, so long as the diameter isn't too much different and its kept off the driven axle.

Cheers
