W124 sportline

I have recently purchased a 1993 W124 320E Sportline Saloon, and have a couple of questions.

Firstly how rare is it, 124's are quite a common sight on our roads but I have yet to see another Sportline saloon.

Secondly, I need to replace the rear shock absorbers. Did they differ on this model from other 124's? Is there a recommended upgrade?

The sportline version was an option at time of purchase. No specific engine size but I doubt there would be many 230's with this option - mostly 300's and 320's.

Yes the shocks are different.. they are designed for stiffer and shorter springs, other differences are stiffer front and rear anti roll bars .

I'd go to your stealership and get genuine replacements - you may be pleasently surprised about the price. ;)

There were 2 sportline options on the W201's and the w124's.

The suspension pack included:

low profile tyres, 205/55 on the W201's and 205/60 on W124's

7Jx15 alloy wheels

Lower, firmer suspension

More direct steering

The interior pack included:

4 individual sports seats with a check design availible in Black, Blue, Brazil, Grey and Cream cloth. Leather was an option.

Smaller(390mm)steering wheel and a nappa leather gearshift

You could order any one or both packs but the full interiour pack could not be ordered on the coupe and the estate got normal rear seats.
4MATIC cars could not be optioned with either pack

The Sportline check cloth could be specified as an option for standard seats

I indeed own a seemingly very rare 1992 w124 230e sportline, minus the sportline interior, but with leather instead.. I have to say it's the best car I have owned in ages, suspension is very firm just as i like it.. Recently I drove to the lake district, lots of windy roads, that trip showed how good the sprotline really is, firm and reassuring..

I spotted a 300 24v locally with in sportline guise plust the sportline interior in black leather.. ver very nice..

wow... never heard of a 124 sportline.
I'd like very much to see what they look like..
Could you guys suggest where i can find a picture??

I own a 1995 124 E220 and I LOVE it.. Best machine i've driven!
Only needed to change the lightbulbs, shock absorber and bumper in so many years. it's doing great at 205000km.

would be more than happy to post a picture of my 300TE 24v. However have never worked out how to do it, sorry. The Sortsline Suspension pack is great unless you live any where near to speed bumps.

Fortunately I have a tow bar fitted which occasionally gets a scrape regardless of how careful you are!

The self leveling suspension is great for quick dashes across the channel for a beer and wine runs. I have not had to replace them however GSF have them in at £124+vat each, could be worse I remember having a Rover SD1 many years ago with self leveling suspension and they were considerably more then.

Its a 1991 and still looks good with nearly 160k on the clock.

I think there's an article from our Administrator(or regulator or something)
Right at the top of the forum on how to upload images.
But yeah... sometimes those things don't help much.
I screwed up setting up a poll once...some of you guys might remember that.

HOpe you have better luck.

Sportsline Images

Good Evening
Ackers Ridge was looking for a photo of w124 230e Sportsline. Couldn't find this particular model but if you go to Google IMAGES and type as your search "Mercedes Sportline", you'll get loads of photos. (Some better than others).
Hope this helps.

My car is a 300TE-24 Sportline. It has the lower stiffersuspension, and faster steering rack. Fitted with the orriginal 7J alloys and 205/60/15 tyres. Also has black leather interior with 2 electric heated memory seats up front.
It is VERY different to drive than the previous 2 W124 TE's I've owned. More accurate steering, though heavier, much flatter through bends, less squat and yaw and reasonably comfy ride. I'm very impressed witht he handling and grace the car has, though the boy racers round here hate the car..... Nothing like a big old Benz filling your mirrors and then blasting past up hill on a dual carriagway in near total silence while they buzz away frantically trying to keep up....
