There is a fairly harsh screeching noise coming from the fan belt area on my 1988 W124 200. The tension on the belt felt good and belt is in good condition so I removed it and started checking all the pulleys for looseness or noise. All seem fine except the power steering pump pulley in which movement can be felt.

My question is do I have to replace the whole steering pump to fix this or can I change the pulley bearing on its own?

most people make the mistake that the steering pump is at fault.
it isn't.
with engine off , lift bonnet and remove the black plastic cover from
the front of the engine. you will find a cylinder here which has wires plugged on to it.
this is a electromagnet which operates the cam accuator.
start engine then unplug this unit and the rattling should stop!
if it does you will require either a replacement electromagnet (£60)
or replace the accuator mechanism (£360).
you can also just leave them disconnected and the car will run just fine without it!

the choice is yours, my friend!
