I have a 1992 300CE and am experiencing a whining/scraping noise on steering lock to the right. Discs and pads have been replaced, removed and re-fitted but a specialist cannot find the fault - any ideas??

Bruiser.

Bruiser.

It's your steering pump.
Under full load a worn steering pump will whine and sound like something is rubbing. This can give the driver a false sense of what the problem is.
My E300TD went exactly how you've described 6 months ago.
I had the pump changed and now it's as quiet as a mouse.
Exactly the same happened to my mates E300TD too.
Trust me.

If it were the steering pump surely it would make the noise on both locks?

Damed good answer, if it makes the noise on both locks then thats one problem and not abnormal, but if it makes the noise on one lock, thats oversteer. Put your steering wheel in the centre position and turn to the left. then try the same test to the right, are they the same number of turns?

Yes that's a good point, but Bruiser doesn't say whether his car makes a noise on the right-hand lock ONLY. Maybe I've misunderstood :(

I first noticed the noise from my steering pump on one particular small roundabout. I can't recall whether I also heard a noise on left-hand turns. Sorry.

Maybe Bruiser could let us know whether the noise is heard on left-handed locks too.
