I've just tried to reverse my 1995 E280 automatic estate off my drive (up a reasonable slope). There was a bit of a bang, that didn't seem to come from the engine/front or the car and now it will not go into reverse, or park. By which I mean, if you put the selector into reverse it does not engage and when you put it into park, it makes a couple of ticking noises, as if it is trying to do something, but the car still rolls forward. I don't know if it will go into drive, as the car is only about six inches from a wall so I can't really try it.

What are the likely causes of such miserable behavior?

Your thoughts will be gratefully received

Cheers

Alf.

I would think by the way you said "big bang" that a major part of the gear box has let go!!

Quite a simple job to do but you will need a torq key (think that's what they are called) to undue joint from diff.
No need to remove hub, just the 28mm nut on the end of the shaft.
I have a spare 1/2 shaft should you want one.

I don't think I can undertake the repair myself really. I'm not good at that sort of thing and I haven't got any where to do it. Thanks though.

I was thinking the same. Awesome. Season's Greetings everyone and THAT's the way through le Crunch.

Where is the car? (i.e., postcode: we know it's in your drive facing downhill and 6" from a wall! Personally I'd put in an old mattress, Christmas styrofoam or similar.)

Well it was really my inlaw's drive, but it has now been hauled to a garage Cheshire by the AA. I'm waiting on confirmation of the problem.

Drive shaft most likely, but I did once have a prop let go on the splined section because the pinch nut had come completely undone!
If you have the 'handbrake' on just try popping it into drive anyway.
If the driveshaft has failed you'll be able to see the flanged section of the d/shaft turning where it comes out of the diff, but for gods sake support & secure the car properly!
ps,I have a gearbox or prop if needed!

Alf you poor bloke: the whole in-laws thing was an added twist ("and in THIS you carry round my daughter?!") Ignore it if it's there: good enough for a queen that vehicle. But meanie, you really think he was going to risk taking out a wall of the in-laws' house?! House v 124: not a fair match. Good luck with the bill anyway and Happy New Year.

To be fair,I would ask my inlaws to stand just the other side of the wall & support it just in case anything went wrong!

So it is the half shaft indeed. However, the garage reckon there are a few different versions so, have you got a part number for your spare, or some means of telling if it is the right one and how much do you want for it?

Incidentally, Mercedes want FROM £608 plus vat for a new one!!

Thanks to all

Talk to Smudge first, but if he draws a blank I may be able to help.
Not sure if this is appropriate but.......
SMUDGE-I see you're breaking a couple of estates,do you have any spheres for the rear end,as I think that I may need a couple for a W124 280t.

Give me a ring on 07950030508 regarding the 1/2 shaft.
If you can get a part number that would help. However in my experience of breaking pre 1991 W124 cars they all appear to be the same!

No spheres sorry they are all either gone or already promised.

Good luck and a happy new year

The father in-law was just saying what a nice car it was when the incident occurred so naturally, I blame him!
