I'm Sad - that said read on at your own risk.

I'm lucky to have a number of vehicles, my favourite being a 1992 Mercedes 320ce (w124).
It's got some rust on the front wings, about 6cm2 on passenger side and 3cm2 on drivers.
rather than taking the car to be painted with wings on and have the surface "tarted up", I've taken off the passenger side wing first so i can have the rust repaired, (either professionally or myself - if its not too difficult, i sit behind a desk all day) - with the face and back of the wing painted / treated.
I think I'd like to sand the rust off, prime with zinc primer and paint / lacquer etc - but this is what i need advice on!I got this idea was from the MK1 Golf GTI site, I've got one of those and was reading their restoration section).
I'm happy to clean the inner wing and paint/treat/wax as appropriate as this is within my expertise level.

Has anyone done this before? or could you suggest somewhere where i could take the wing / wings and have them restored (I'm located Nr Pontefract in West Yorkshire although my office is in Altrincham in Cheshire).
I'd like to keep the car as original as possible so I'm not looking for the whole wings to be painted, just the bits i notice are knobbly when i wash the vehicle. any advice on product to use in cleaning / protecting would also be gratefully received. As said, I'm a bit of a sado with cars and tend to go over the top with cleaning / restoring etc but generally buy the brand names - Autoglym, T Cut, Hammerite etc) - would like advice on best to use.

Thanks in anticipation, Simon

Simon, sand off the paint, if the metal comes up bright silver, that is fine, if the metal has black patches, then it is no longer sound and should be cut out,and a new piece put in. If you do not,1 year down the line it will start to blister again and you are back to square one. its better to have a patch of metal and filler than filling rust holes.

If this is the case it may be worth taking a spot blaster to the wing to completely remove any traces of rust, then weld in a plate before repainting.

Im currently in the process of sorting this out on my SEC. Its either spot blast and weld a new plate in (then make good) at the tips of the wings or shell out £600+VAT per new wing from MB!

With spot blasting I have heard that tiny bits of rust can get peened down into the metal, though this was more for chassis work and its only a thought

Painting

If you try and paint a local area on a wing you will have significant colour matching problems. If you don't mind different colours that's fine, but if you really want to maintain the condition, you will need to get a professional paint job.
They others are right about rust, it always comes back eventually, but you can do a lot to stop it by good preparation, anti rust treatment and good priming.
If you start cutting out metal and welding in new, you will distort the original wing, especially if you gas weld. Better to mig weld as heat much lower.
If you take the wing off, remember to treat the inside as well, and it is a good opportunity to underseal at the same time, both the wing and the inner wing. There is a sealing compound that is worth fitting between the wing and the body.
Good luck.

Good advice.
i took the wing off thinking it could be saved as the rust is small and just on the surface. also wanted it off so i could ensure inner wing was good and treated. what underseal / products / makes should i use?
i read a good review of the http://www.bilthamber.co.uk/ stuff. what do others use?
When i first got the car i had all the plastic / bumpers off, no rust what so ever, so roughly coated in waxoyl (hammerite stuff i think). now i've got some more time i wanted to clean that off and put something on that would last a good few years.
Thoughts?

Underseal

3M do a product called Body Schutz which is very good. Sprayed on is best as it gets in all the small places. Brushed on is nearly as good, but only as good as the applicator ! Leave no gaps, make sure it is free of damp and dust before you start or you seal in the damp and rust and the dust will prevent adhesion.
If you have the wing off, do it before reassembly as you have great access.
Good luck !:p
