Just had thought, perhaps be better to just raplace a couple of wings on my 300d rather than patching up, can anyone tell me how big a job this would be?

Oh and you might want to paint them too- unless ya like that 2cv hippie rainbow car look ;) I'm gonna do the same- will probably go with merc parts for an easy fit- but if you have time to fiddle them to get the fit perfect (or if you don't really mind if the panel gaps don't line up perfectly), GSF and eurocarparts do them for about 30 quid if I remember correctly. At that price, used wings are a false economy, since they seem to be the only part on the 124 thats always rusty. The 124 was designed to be a taxi, and so the wings were designed to be changed easily.

Also, following on the last post, blow lots of waxoyl goo around the bumper fitting holes at the front, the holes for the rocker trim panel, and in the wheelarch lip, as this is where the rust starts.

Pattern wings dont fit very well, the gaps between the wing and bonnet can be massive. Buy good second hand which gives you the chance to see how to remove them or new from MB.

W124 Wing Replacement

Ive just changed the o\s front wing on mine. had poor rust all round the wheel arch and found a non rusting one in a local yard, not perfect but definitely better and in the same colour too.

simple and straightforward job, (I know i should have done photos, sorry) but its quite easy.

  1. undo the bolts you can see inside wing, in engine bay.
  2. remove lower trim in front of door to reveal 2 more bolts.
  3. 3 bolts hiding between front door and wing, can be removed (door fully open) with 1\4" or 3\8" socket (1\2" too big) without damaging door or new wing.
  4. remove bolt holding rear of bumper to bracket (behind front of wing) and bend out of the way, carefully, just enough to reveal another bolt. i had to drill this one out due to rust holding it in and rounding the head.
  5. remove indicator (release clip and push out).
  6. remove headlight (2 screws one side, 1 on other) to reveal all remaining bolts holding the wing. 8mm socket needed
  7. Wing should now pull away, but remember the side repeater is connected. twist and release the wires and you're clear.

be careful with the fittings and repeater as they can be brittle at this age.

replacement is reverse procedure, and a tip is to fit bolts finger tight until you get it lined up (i started by lining the trim from wing to door) the tighten all bolts.

I would estimate 2 hours for the job, given the right tools and coffee stops.

Nothing to worry about with this job, I even managed to remove the wing in the yard using only the Merc issue toolkit.

hope this helps and let us know how you get on.

Paul

p.s. now if only I can find one for the other side.

Well done on the wings, I have that job to do on my old beater W124 this year and your experiences tell me it isn't going to be too difficult.

Except I like to make things difficult for myself and plan to get cheap wings from GSF or such like, get them pre-sprayed and then fit them. I know the colour won't match exactly, and the panel gaps won't be good, but then it's only a daily beater car after all !

Cheers,

HOW DARE YOU INFER THAT MY BELOVED IS A BEATER.

I'll have you know its collectable. Or so the binmen tell me every week, saying they'll collect it on their rounds.

Only kidding there, will post a pic later in the week. I know the colour isnt spot on (i think its mine thats faded........ ever so slightly).
