As previous posts show I'm finding it hard to wean myself from 124s. But as someone who likes to keep cars fairly original but also likes music to drive by I was wondering if anyone has managed to improve the speaker arrangement in a 124 without massacring the body and trim too much. Mine's an estate so its even worse and I've blown those ****y little dashboard speakers several times.
My simple equipment is a period MB cassette radio with CD changer under the boot floor.

Sadly cant be done, if you do a search someone fitted some reasonable speakers recently, but of the original size.

There's lots of info on this in the forum if you do a search

Some people have persuaded standard 5" (13 cm) speakers to fit in the dash but it's hard work and it's a difficult space to work in. Whatever you fit I'd roll off the bass to them and use a separate subwoofer. It's the bass that kills small full-range units - roll them off somwhere between 80 and 250 Hz using an electronic crossover with a steep slope and they'll handle quite a lot of power if they're a quality speaker

You can put tweeters in the triangular trim in the corner of the door - that works quite well

The best solution is probably door builds in the front bottom of the door. Lots of work, though

You'll find lots of ideas, including photos of a few W124 setups, at

This thread has some useful photos of dash speakers in a W124 coupe

I have some uprated front dash speakers, speakers in the bootlid, a sub in the boot all being run by a dirty big amp. It's not the best but it is good enough.

It can be done, but its all down to budget. I have a set of custom door pods made for my CE, I now have a set of Focal Utopia 3 way components in the car. the Doors house a pair of 6.5" mid bss drivers at the bottom, the dash houses the 4" mid ranges and I also had tweeter pods made to do at the pos of the door, see below.

A setup like this would need to be powered using an external amp.
