I've gleaned a little of the situation from earlier posts. Hope you have a tranquil Christmas.

Obviously, you will have considered if you have a friend or know someone with similar age car with 116/117 engine, to swap over the module?

Yes thanks; I'm reminded of the dictum 'a freind in need is no freind..........!' I think there is another forum poster nearby in Sheffield with a W126, but, quite honestly, I would be disinclined to ask someone to pull apart even this bit of their working car. I think it's pretty clear that it's the EZL. Tried my local breaker today but they're closed, possibly until after NYE. I have had a n offer to trest the unit from Jeremy of one of the other clubs. I also have my eye on a module on ebay in Germany at a reasonable price, and 2 in UK at rather more.
I'll update when there's something to report.

Solution

Glad to say that the problem has been solved by fitting a second hand EZL ignition module. The only issue which arose was that the three captive bolts which hold the thing on the engine side of the wheel arch sheared when I undid the nuts, despite presoaking. The easy way to drill them out to replace with new is to remove the headlight assembly for ease of access, cut off the stubs fairly flush with a dremel type tool and then drill through (M6 bolts required). The old thermal paste on the used unit should be cleaned off with isopropyl alcohol and fresh paste applied - Maplins stock it. One £10 tube is sufficient.

Thanks for all the responses.
