Its pronounced Llanfynydd, stoopid!
a 1983 500sec that has started first time all its life ( the mechanic has known it since new) has started playing up. all the fuses have been checked and cleaned, some relays replaced etc, and eventually after fiddling a lot with the contents of the fuse box, something MIGHT just happen. whats puzzling is that there seems to be only intermittent power getting to the fuel pump, but how does power get down to the fuel pump? there is nothing on the fuse box card that mentions fuel pump, but power must get to the pump from the battery somehow. when its behaving, the car can still start with all fuses in the box removed, so none of them is powering the fuel pump. also we have removed each of the relays one at a time, and the car still starts, so power is getting to the ignition, then to some hidden relay somewhere (????), then down on to the fuelpump near the tank. we have looked, but cannot find another set of fuses anywhere. can anyone help on this one? are we barking upthe wrong tree?

hi the relays are quite coommon to fail on these models.the next time you have any issues with it if you remove the relay completely and get a piece of wire a couple of inches long and bear each end of it,then if you bend it to a loop and loop out terminal 30 and terminal 87 the fuel pump will then run permanently if this cure the problem you then know you need a fuel pump relay.
hope this helps

REF MY QUESTION TODAY 28/12/07 AS TO THE SAFETY OF RUSSIAN WEBLINKS this is the one I think I clicked on. Am sure that TV would not put up anything that was not 100% safe, but perhaps content has changed since it was first put up?

Just funny that it happens the same day I change my security programs. Seem to recall same thing happened when I changed from Norton Antivirus to McAfee a couple of years ago. Perhaps the sting is in tail by the "Remove" instruction of a disenfrachised provider of their particular security product. So you don't want us anymore - well sort this out!!

Hi Malcolm, I also went from Norton to McAfee and encountered a problem at the time a few years back. I think it was the 2004 version of Norton and I think I recall a gremlin getting in at the time of changeover. It was a really bad piece of Malware. I do wonder about the sting factor. I suggest you download (as a save to desktop) Spybot Search and Destroy, scan it with McAfee and if OK download it to your Computer and do a scan of your computer.

I am no longer happy to rely on any Security entity that I have paid to service my Computer not to put in a few "added value" items that they sell to others.

I suppose I should add that all advice is without responsibilitiy or liability... take extreme care

Going back to the original question, I have just made a discovery but not certain what it tells me?

My Car won't start after two weeks standing idle. It hiccuped just once on 21st November. (about to take the family to a Pub for my Birthday lunch. I just died as I went round a corner qtr miles from the house. Got some petrol and put it in just in case. Two hours later when I had called the AA I returned to the car to find it started and has been going merrily ever since. That is, until I gave it a brief two week holiday.

I've just replaced the Kickdown Relay with one I possibly took out of the Car a couple of years ago and whereas previously on switching on the ignition I had no ticking sound from the pump area, now I get a continual low whining sound, but no clicking. If this is diaphram based, presumeably clicking is what I am hoping for? Car did not start.

What does this tell me other than the Relay may have become a little damp and the replacement is doing the job. But what of the pump? Is it knackered.

I had the pump replaced a couple of years ago with a s/h one. Found the old one in the Garage and just briefly attached a battery to the terminals. A Whir and a squeek, and a bit of a jump. Not sure if I should have done this or if the pump may be OK. It was only replaced as one of many things to try to sort a similar problem of dying in 2005.
