Help! My 1983 W126 380 SE has developed an intermittent clunk/heavy knock from what feels like just in front of the pedals. You can feel it right through the car. Only does it on acceleration (but not always), sometimes warmed up, sometimes cold. It doesn't feel like the auto transmission (and fluid levels are fine). Nothing obvious on a visual check of suspension set up, but I'm no kind of expert.

Any thoughts?

Would agree with Malcolm, I had your symptoms and replaced center bearing, 89 in this link and doughnuts, 92 back and 95 front, and 32 which is a rubber boot bearing which was torn to pieces. If this is your problem it would be worth replacing all these items considering the age of your car.
That link is just to give you an idea, it is for a C180.
