This is maybe a hint already described in previous threads, but anyway:
I've just bought a 380SE with the 'classic' W126 damp boot problem. Turned out the reasons was:
a) Dried-out rubbers sealings on the rear light housings
b) The boot lid rubber sealing (on body), it had gone loose from the glue over the years, there were lots of moist under the list.
Solution was to dismantle rear light housings and boot lid list, thoroughly clean the 'groove' for the boot lid list for old glue, grind/prime/paint any rust spots and refit a new boot lid rubber sealing, as well as new rubber sealings for the rear light housings.
Hope this can be of use to other W126 owners having the same problem.
