The indicators and hazard lights have stopped working. I am hoping this is merely the relay. Problem is, with no haynes manual I don't know which one it is. Can someone please tell me where the indicator relay is?

indicators..............

The relay is under the relay cover at driver's side of the bulkhead just in front of the windscreen. Just pop the cover. If you have the same electric layout as the W124 series I have a brand new relay - make me an offer! It cost £52.00 new from europarts.
The part nos. on the box are 542 22 0010, 201 821 0247, 3.201.300, and on the relay itself 3.201.300 and described as 12v/2 1/6x21W Multi-Function-Relay Flasher (for TrailerTerm. AE) Wiper Interval/Heating

W126

Thanks for the e-mail.

I will see if there is a relay that matches those part numbers. I am not sure which one it is. There are two silver ones and behind them three bigger black ones.

The wipers and the intermitant are working ok, does this relay serve both functions?

The main dealer is quoting £170 for a indicator/hazard/wiper relay.

However GSF are quoting:

M93550 INDICATOR/HAZARD RELAY 126 84> £10.00

Big difference in price. Are they the same thing?

I would first check the hazard switch; flick it on and off a couple of times. If the switch does not make contact when it?s in the off position you will not have any indicators. Very seldom the indicator lights do not light up when flasher unit is U/S.
The lights normally come on but they won?t flash its worth getting the hazard switch checked. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the message

Funny you should mention hazard switches as the last time I used the car ( a few weeks back) I had the centre switches out of the dash to replace the heater control bulbs. I did check the switches when I refitted them and they all worked. Maybe it's a coincidence!

The indicator lights do not work when the stalk is moved, the dashboard indicator lights do not show direction either.

Do you suggest I buy a new hazard switch as a starting point?

I personally would change the switch first or a least get the switch checked.

Thanks for the advice.

I will have a look at the switch tonight.

Is this a common problem?

I checked the hazard switch last night, dismantled it and try to operate the exposed switch but it did n't work. I have bought a new hazard switch which I will try tonight.

Don't worry about indicators, old cars like these don't need them, just stick you arm out of the window.

Thanks for the advice Justino, as winters coming and an MOT I don't think it's a long term solution!

I took 190s advice and replaced the hazard switch, £9+VAT from GSF and I have working indicators again!

I have got a bad misfire to cure now. The ignition lead from the coil to cap has rubbed against the air filter box and is arcing when I crank it. I have ordered a replacement. Hopefully that's the source of the problem!

Glad to hear its fixed, good luck with the electrical problem, there's more miles in the old girl yet. Those old 280's are great cars, particularly suitable for a road trip North of the border, what do you think?
