Please excuse my ignorance but this is the first car I have had with a viscous fan! Are they ment to spin when cold or should it only engage when hot.

When I run my 1984 280SE the fan is spinning all the time! If this is normal how does the fan improve cooling when hot? Does it spin faster?

I would be grateful for your feedback.

thanks

This fan should spin all the time. You will find that if your car engine is cold, you could freely spin the fan with your hand. (When engine is off!)

Let the engine warm up and switch it off and immediatedly try spinning the fan with your hand. If will feel much stiffer.

Used to confuse me as well but as well but then tried what Francois suggested and I saw the light.

Mike

Mike,

On the idling problem. Not yet. I don't have much time to spend on this, so it is propably going to take a while still.

I'll post something when it is sorted.
