HELLO AGAIN
After a recent heavy rain i found that my wipers would not switch off unless i turned the engine off. On restart they would stay off until i used them. Then they would just stay on and only operated id normal mode or fast the intermittent wipe did not work.
(Also for some unknown reason the radio does not switch on even if i press the on button)

I hope the above makes sense ?

Ouch another new fault, I think that I might unplug the stalk first on this one, or could it be the N10 relay, that is easy to unplug and try

Open the bonnet and look at the fuse box, I find sometimes depending on where the CL's parked rain water gets to the fuse box, look for condensation on the inside of the lid.

Also at the back of the fuse bos there is a long relay its quite visible. unplug it and see if the pins are damp.

thanks for Malcolm, that is unplugging the stalk difficult ? Also which is the N10 relay is that the long one behing the fuse box ? If so i have unplugged that relay and sprayed some water repellent in it but no difference. Whithout th engine started but all the warning lights on the wipers work fine, as soon as i start the engine and try the wipers they just stay on.
My word its expensive to keep these cars going.

Just try to work this out and just one question, do the wiper start and stop in key 2 without the engine running, or is it that once with the key turned to 2 they will not turn off

It is the combination relay unit at fault. It also controls the indicators, hazards and radio and is a black box about 4 inches long located directly behind the main fuse box under the bonnet. It's a simple fix of simply replacing the box, although it's a bit fiddly to get all the connectors off the bottom - It is a solid state device, and not repairable.

I will It is about £70 from a Merc breakers, £170 new from Merc.

There is one condenser in this relay that can leak and the micro cannot reset. I will find details tonight

Dear all,

Many thanks for all your help, alas i want to change my name to desperate i have now changed relay 1405420019 and have also tried changing part 71 i was able to get a real for part 71 number 140 820 30 26 but when i went to change it the relay on my car reads
140 820 24 26 and the electrical connectors are different. I tried to make it fit but it just would not fit.
Do you guys have any ideas ? I have as yet not changed the stalk .
