Hello All and greetings from sunny Australia .

I have a 1998 W168 A160 ACS bought as a non goer / project and would greatly appreciate any advise .
At this stage I am awaiting some wiring diagrams .
· W 168 A160 , 1999 Avantgarde , ACS , 182,000Klms

· Serviced by MB dealers until recently

· Service book does not display 049 in the range of codes re. the starter motor type

· Owner was told it required a new starter motor

· New battery , fully charged at 13.4V

· No volts @ the mauve/white 3 pin connector near the positive end of the battery when ign sw. in posn. 3

· When ign. is in posn. 2 all warning / caution lights are illuminated however there is no indication of gear selection ( as this is a ACS it will not start unless in neutral )

· When manually closing the contacts of the starter relay K3 , the starter activates and cranks the engine

· All earthing points in the engine bay cleaned

· The ignition switch contactor is replaced , new ,and battery recharged

· On the next attempted start all indications are normal including indication of gear selection and the engine cranks over and starts , runs for about 15 seconds then stops

· Subsequent attempts to restart give the original symptoms ie. No gear indication and no engagement of the starter motor

· The ASSYST service indicator has been reset

· The door locking system operates normally

· The key fob batteries test OK

· All relevant fuses checked OK

· ACS control module elect. connector pins cleaned

· MAFS/ECU “ “ “ “ “

· ESP/BAS “ “ “ “ “

· ABS “ “ “ “ “

· Gear selector reset carried out

· Relays K7 and K10 transposed P/N 002 542 13 19

· Relays K8 and K9 transposed P/N 002 542 25 19

Kind Regards , churchy

Hi mattkh ,
This is an Australian delivered vehicle .... No alarm system is fitted ,
just the standard DAS , working very well as an immobiliser right now !
Thank you for responding .

Get the faults read, if the acs is faulty then it will not allow it to start.

Thanks star ,
Until I get hold of the wiring diagrams and OBD reader I am guessing that the no starting is due to a no gear selection signal being sent to the ECU ,perhaps due to one of the two switches at the gear box end of the selector cables .
Just a bugger to access , but will check out their operation .
I appreciate your response . Cheers
