The little display showing which drive mode you're in and some other things seems to be going a bit dim down the bottom right corner so the letters aren't complete. Can you get a replacement panel or is it the whole thing that has to be replaced? Can it even be replaced??

As above, and yes, it can be replaced - not that complicated either.
You'd need to determine which version of LCD panel you have - they come in two voltage types, 7V is more common, I believe.

Thanks GLK - any idea how to find out which voltage (short of potentially releasing smoke!)?

I think there's a way to determine the voltage of your instrument cluster by its serial number, but I don't know how exactly.

There's a simpler (for me) way to just measure the voltage, when it is powered, between these two points (pic lifted from AliExpress or eBay):
