Hi, my W169 A150 radiator fan doesn't work. I'm pretty sure its the motor rather than sensor because the temperature gauge works fine and I get overheat warnings if the car is stood in traffic.

My question is, how do I get it out to replace it? It appears to clip on to a housing which in turn is clipped to the radiator, but clearance between the radiator and engine block is very tight so it looks to me that even if I release the clips there isn't enough room to slide it upwards and out.

Has someone done this before / got access to WIS where they can advise what the correct removal procedure is please?

Thanks in advance

Hi odie, and welcome :)

I looked into this recently, when I thought I might need to replace mine, on A200 2006 C169 - turns out a bit of crud was stuck to the shroud and was stopping the fan from rotating freely - a bit of cleanup and some silicone spray and it's good as new.

Here's a couple of WIS files I pulled, however I have no personal experience with actually removing the fan.

As your's is 2005 model, it might be eligible for Mercedes recall if it's got a single piece shroud - you need to check with MB directly, and see attached list.
If that's the case you might even get a brand new fan for free ;)

Let us know how you get on :)

Cheers,
David

Many thanks David, apologies for delay in responding.

I've checked the VIN and unfortunately it's not on your recall list so it looks like I'm going to have to get my hands dirty:rolleyes:

Looking at the instruction it does appear like it should squeeze out through the gap in front of the engine.

It still looks very tight to me but will keep you posted as to how I get on...

The main clip is at the top NS quarter, push it in, then rotate (clockwise looking from the front, if I'm not mistaken).

Ok I have successfully replaced the fan, here's how I did it (applies to 2006 model A150 petrol with A/C):

1. Disconnect the air intake hose from the front nozzle and unclip the front nozzle from the radiator grille.
2. Unscrew the 2 retaining bolts and lift off the entire air cleaner assembly and put to one side.
3. Unclip (one plastic thumb bolt) the entire screenwash tank and put to one side.
4. (I found this necessary to provide enough clerance) Unscrew the 4 retaining bolts and lift off the throttle body (yellow arrow in photo) and put to one side.

5. Unclip the A/C pipe from the clip at top of the fan assembly.
6. Unplug the main blue electrical plug (yellow arrow in photo)
7. Pull off the 3 clips (red arrows in photo) which hold the sensor cable to the fan assembly (these are a pain to remove) and set the cable to one side.
8. Unclip the fan assembly from the radiator (side clips arrowed green) by pressing the clips in from above and lifting the fan assembly upwards (these clips are actually really smooth to release once you work out the knack - there is no need to force them) PA280144.JPG

10. Wiggle the fan assembly gradually diagonally upwards and out through the gap you have created (direction of yellow arrow).
11. Replacement is reversal of removal. PA280146.JPG

For info - the reason mine had failed was clear - water ingress had caused one of the control module connections to corrode right through leaving an open gap (arrowed). PA280151.JPG
