Just had a similar problem on mine (300te24)

Tried many things, the biggest recommendation was fuel filter being clogged. After a trip to a local specialist, the removal of the bellhousing and a good clean of the butterfly on the inlet manifold it again idles like a dream. So for me it was a build up of general muck!

(not a disclaimer but my technical terms and names for parts may not be the exact ones! (im sure he said bellhousing!))

The bellhousing is something else (gearbox) he might have said throttle body.

Indeed the fuel filter would be the prime suspect.

I have done all of the above but still have the problem. Has anyone had problems with the speed sensor on the bellhousing??
Oh, and thanks to everyone.

May I ask a couple of questions:

1. Does it idle smoothly (same speed), or is it erratic?
2. What's the idle speed, both in neutral and when you select Drive or Reverse? I'm assuming idle speed is higher when the car is cold, then gradually falls as it warms up, then settles at its lowest speed, once fully warm.

190E idle

Paul,
idling smoothly & to specs. Cold start, warm-up and load compensation all okay. Is there a speed input for the idle solenoid power supply??

To be honest, I don't know, although I imagine so. It would cost pennies (maybe 1/3 can of WD40) to clean the TDC sensor and the area around it, maybeit derives the signal off this?

Have you tried knocking it into neutral whilst slowing/stopping and does this save the engine from stalling? Ie is it an issue which is magnified by the fact that you're slowing, but in drive, therefore braking against the engine to slow it?

I'd be tempted to tweak the idle speed to the upper limit of the range of adjustment. It would also have the side benefit, of increasing your oil pressure at idle.

I was going to mention the idle control valve, but as it idles smoothly i wont bother. LOL.

Have you tried running some petrol injector cleaner through it yet?(the stuff you pour in the petrol tank. It worked wonders on mine and i use it at every service now.(3000 miles)
