The blower motor on my 190 has finally packed in after a few months of odd behaviour. A bit difficult driving when its damp now.

Do I have to take the car to bits to get at it ? Likeis it a dashboard out job ?

Ta in advance.

The words bastard and fiddly come to mind.

Got it out, presume the fan should spin very freely with no resistance ?

This one doesn't. I'll be onto Dronsfields in a mo !!

Getting the old one out isn't bad, but replacing the clips that hold the casing halves together is very difficult. I found that bending a long piece of stiff welding filler rod into a hook at one end allowed me to put it through the hole in the end of the clip to provide the necessary tension on it as you reach down with something else to push on the side of the clip to engage it. If you simply try to push on the side, the end will fold over and never engage. You'll see what I mean when you take it apart.

Sounds damned fiddly - mine's (190e) making horrible squeaking sounds though working OK. So, do I have to take the wiper motor off to get in to give it a squirt of lubricant? or can I get it by pulling the central vents of from inside the car?

it's really annoying cos the car is so sweet apart from that and in this cold having the window open aint an option!

If you can figure out how to get the bonnet vertical its a lot easier I think. I couldn't and it wasnt.

As Bundy says,

leaf cover off,

rubber seal on top of firewall off,

remove four 8mm bolts holding firewall (these are a bit of a sod),

undo nut holding wiper assembly to firewall,

undo nuts holding wiper mech to car (dont need to undo the ones holding the mech to the motor) some of these are a bastard to get at

pull firewall to the front of the car (only moves a bit, but its enough)

get wiper out of the way

undo two bolts on fan assembly cover

rag this until it comes out (F knows how I'm going to get the bugger back on)

you will now see the fan and the three bolts. these are easy to get off.

undo the two wires connecting the fan + wrap tape around one of them if you're not replacing immediately

Phone Dronsfields and shell out the princely sum of £35 for a fan.

I do hope it comes with the fan on the motor, cos its the fan is an iteference fit on the shaft..... Mine is still siezed, still very stiff to turn so its going to the graveyard.

Re bonnet. At the bottom of the strut there is a metal clip. You just push it backwards and the strut will then allow the bonnet to fully open.

To get it back down again you have to press a little button(which has a red cap on it)on the right hand side hinge(the same side as the strut)

It took me ages to work out how to get the bugger back down again the first time i did it. LOL

I hope this makes sence mate.

Open Bonnet right up to the vertical position then remove wiper blade a and remove plastic trim under windscreen Remove wiper motor by loosening the 3 bolts under the scuttle panel and 1 bolt on the bulkhead panel, then loosen the 6 bolts on the bulkhead panel and slide forwards remove the 2 screws on top heater motor and remove cover then at the drivers side of the heater remove the 3 screws and remove heater motor should only take 1-1.5 hours very easy.

It sounds like a real pig to do. I wonder how much some poor sod in a garage'd charge to do it? £100? f***ing annoying! I'm still tempted to squirt wd40 down anywhere tempting...

If yer fan is not going properly, the WD40 will only be blown back in your face.

Its not that bad to replace; just looks awful when written down. These are apparently wear out items.

Wost case; duff fan results in a cold car; which is admittedly pretty bad in the snow. If you turn the fan setting to 1, then you get a vaguely lukewarm stream from the side vents via matrix.

Look on the bright side; how old is your 190 and how many cars in the carpark are as old (none ?) and whats wrong with yours that you can't fix? (nowt)

LNM,

theTrue true. I like your philosophy! And am now glad I resisted puting the 'lube' where it dont belong! I'll have a go tho I reckon I'll get m' dad (used to be an engineer on trains 'n' small plant) to 'help' me even tho he's happier with diesels! I reckon I'll wait 'till it gets a bit warmer first though!

Cheers
