I have just replaced my 1986 190E (2litre) with a 1991 model which has aircon. The heater in the new car blows only lukewarm air and does not heat the car to anything like the level of the 1986 car. Is it my car or were they all like that?

Does the 190 have a duovalve? mine had a single vacuum operated shutoff valve mounted near the air intake of the heater fan. The valve closed when you selected cold and a vacuum was applied to its belows.
If you air con model has the same arrangement you may have a blocked heater water circuit or a partialy choked heater matrix. My 190's matrix was blocked or sludged up and my cure was to get a fresh car (W124).
If you have a duo valve or a single circuit version of it, the heater controler fitted behind the heat control in the dash sends 12volt pulses to modulate the water flow to the matrix at around 1 pulse per second, the pulse legnth being proportional to the heat demand. Putting a small 12v test lamp acrosss each coil of the valve should indicate when the pulses appear' the lamp will flash on for longer if the demand for heat is greater.
