Not so much a mystery more a typical newbie question for which I apologise in advance

What is the plastic object containing hydraulic fluid sitting to the right of the washer bottle at the front left of engine bay (d*mn - wish I had digital camers!). ? It has a spring- like coil round it's body and a removable cap with min and max markings. It is dirty!

I know it's not the p/steering fluid reservoir but the completely pointless Haynes manual does not ID it :x

Thanks

P.S. Does it have any relationship to the ASR system? I ask as the warning light stays on and I'd assumed a dirty sensor (happend before)

It's the res for the self levelling susp.

Nick

Yup it's the reservoir for the self-levelling rear suspension. My previous car (1986 190E 2.0) had this too. The Haynes manual (both the older green one and the newer red version) completely omitted any description of cars with this suspension. Simon, if your car is like my old one then you should see a mechanical pump bolted to the front of the engine that's driven by the camshaft. This pump pressurises the hydraulic suspension system.

Nick/Steve - very many thanks for the ID
You learn something new every day :D

A quick search on 190Rev site indicates that this system uses a special syn. hydraulic fluid - called LMH. Is this correct and do I need to get it from a MB dealer?

Would low fluid in this reservoir cause the ASR light to stay on?

[How can Haynes get away with omitting stuff like this? In addition they have upside down photos and wrong advice. I'd have thought the litigious yanks would have sued them out of existence by now  ]
