Hi

My 190E 1.8 has the familiar drone of the rear wheel bearing. I had the N/S rear done a few years back and now the O/S one has started up.

I chickened out last time as I was busy with a house move etc, but feel I might have a go if its not to grueling. With various other cars, I have removed the whole hub carrier and asked a garage to source the bearing and press out the old one and push in the new one, then I refit the hub to the car.

The rear suspension looks complex with all the links so was worried about taking all this off an affecting alignment etc.

Is it easy to take the bearing out in situ? I have a 2 leg puller and had done other bearings. Must admit they are not my favourite job:(

Thanks for the advice on balance I think I will pass this to a mechanic. Funnily enough I phoned a couple of places I have taken bearings to in the past and when they found out it was a 190 rear, they passed on the opportunity!!

With Peugeot/Cits etc I have had - I always remove the hub - get the garage to press out the old/press in the new, then I bolt it all back together. Its all the links with the Merc 190 rear end and talk of setting it all up properly that scares the bejeevers out of me!

Thanks for the advice.

Taking the hub off is not much of a problem. Taking the bearing out is a different matter. 30 ton press will be needed and quite possibly a new back plate too as they tend to get damaged. Back plate costs in the region of £32 from Mb. Bearing about £60, also Mb.

Smart + others :)
As above, but you might find the handbrake shoes a bit fiddily.
