My 94 1.8 C180 seems hard on petrol. I put £20 in at 90.3p a litre and get about 110 miles. I only have the car and dont really know is this high? There is no smoke no hard starting issues and drives 100%. Would it need a Crypton tune? Is there anything else that could be wrong??

Thanks

22.5 mpg (roughly) is not good!

I get about 29 from my 1999 C200, so would suspect something is amiss with yours. Has it had a recent service? New filters etc. may help. A lot!

Is the car getting up to the correct running temp, if doing short stop start journeys, then at this time of the year it will be a high consumption.

A Crypton tune could not do much if anything for your car

You should be able to get around 30mph if you are lightfooted and if it is regulary serviced according to the schedule. It normal if you spend all your time queuing at heavy traffic like central London.

Get it diagnosed you may never know what you may find.;)

what is a crypyon tune . pls exp.

I Crypton tune up used to be a van that went around and it would set the timing, points and carbs up,,these days it is all electronic so nothing to do, and no adjustments.

I have been thinking on this one too where the fuel consumption is bad,, the only thing that this could be is if the fuel enrichment device was stuck partly open.

This is very easy to check out at any MOT station as they have the exhaust analyzers, just plugged in for two mins would tell you if your car was over fueling

Car was recently serviced. A friend has a diagnostic machine will get him to plug her in. Car gets up to correct running temp. When at tick over it has a very small miss giving a small vibration in the car that is all that it does. I thought this was maybe tick over set to low. As you can tell I am a echanical genious when it comes to cars :p

a lot of the 4 pot engines had a slight miss at idle. Mine did anyway. As Malcolm says, any excess fuel will be picked up as high Co reading on an MOT test. But, to be honest, depending on traffic conditions, 22.5 could be right. The best my C220 ever managed was 33 and that was at a steady 70 for 150 miles when it had 18k on the clock. Other than that 18-25 roughly. A C180 is no more economical than the 220 as it has to work a lot harder so a C180 auto pottering around town on mainly short start/stop journeys could well do that. To get 29 and over you'd really have to be travelling outside rush hour/ on A roads.
To put it in context, my E270cdi only averages 26 in slow traffic.

I find that just about all petrol engines get roughly the same if they are autos, the difference doesn't usually happen because of the engine but more because of the size ad weight of the car.

Obviously as engine tech gets newer things will improve slightly, but if you are doing short journeys (sub 8 miles) or just round town then your figure sounds about right.

I had a c220cdi auto and that would only get 28mpg in winter round town and sub 10 mile journeys.

The MPG all depends on how you use the car and driving habits. If the car is used for short journey, slow average speed, lot of stop/start, heavy foot on the pedals, etc. then the MPG will be high.
