W202 Air Con, please help

I have a 1997 "R plate" C200 sport W202 with air-conditioning (not climate, just manual temp wheels).
On starting the car the EC button remains unlit and the air con is ON as default, all works ok.
I can switch off by illuminating EC button, but I was thought the default setting was Air con off, EC button lit?
Confused, please help, thanks in advance.

just brought c 280 1995 w202 2 weeks ago and on reading the manual i think its default setting is EC button remains unlit and the air con is ON ,if you need/or want to turn it off you press the EC button,
i will have another read of my manual tomorrow to make sure and let you no

Yes when the EC button is lit,, the AC is off
