I just bought my first MB, C200 1998 Elegance with auto transmission and 29800km on the clock. I believe the mileage has been tampered with as it is too low(bought from a dealer and no service record). My mechanic informed you can tamper the mileage for this model 3 times. Does it make sense? Secondly I notice the gearbox is leaking and the mechanic told me it is normal. The leaking is coming from the gasket of the housing at the bottom. Can this be major?
I'm also looking for the specs and photo of this 1998 C200 Elegance model. Can someone kind enogh to share with me? Thank you.

Why not have an HPi check on the car to confirm the mileage.

The mileage can be "reset", but I thought it was only once per dashboard.

The gearbox shouldn't have any leaks. The area you mention is a rubber gasket available for £5 from your local dealer. Whilst at it you might as well have a filter change as well for another £4. The parts are cheaper from the MB dealer than from Eurocarparts.

Hi dieselman. I think I'll go for the HPi check on your advice. I've the feeling the actual mileage is around 50K to 70K km on the clock. Yea, the leaking is coming from the rubber gasket and the workshop will replace the filter as well. Is this leaking common for W202 model? What is the ideal interval to replace the ATF filter?
I'm also planning to put the car through a dyno test, just to be sure about the engine performance. Any opinion? Thanks

You can change meilage quite easily and as many times as you want provided you've got a laptop and a serial cable
ATF should be changed every 60,000 km with the gasket and filter change.

gearbox leak

Hi

This gearbox had a very common oil leak from the electric plug on the righthand side of the box and this always looked like a leak from the gasket but these almost never leak.

repair as follows:-

unscrew heatshield (from near elec plug) and remove.
undo the plug and withdraw from box (lever on plug rotate anticlock to face floor) .
Get 7mm socket on short extension and undo nut at bottom of plug socket on box. withdraw the plug socket and replace the two "o" rings found there. These have been modified and will probably be a different colour.

All the above asumes 722.6 box (electronic w/s)
