is it possible to do this without hooking it up to the computer at a Mercedes garage?

ah right.

just a thought thats all.... mines a manual so no problems but there is a 280 on ebay with this issue and i was wondering if there was a ways round it... :)

to be fair i know a good indie that would do it but i dont have the other means to do the car. PLUS my fuel consumption is bad enough, without a 145mph motor. so is my licence.

Beware any advert that says there is a problem and '....it only needs clearing to fix, really cheap fix....' etc.

If it were that cheap to fix, the owner would do it themselves.

agreed, if it was JUST that, he would get it fixed and sell as no faults..

S class
If some of the other makes of computer can read the fault then they normally can clear it as well, Tho star is the system designed and used to set up the car in the first place

point taken on the "cheap fix" thing... it doesnt say that though....

there was an e class too for "spares or repair" completely bent on one side.... the sill was pretty much a v shape. LOL i think it should have said "spares no repair"

My local garage diagnostic machine would not detect my engine ECU, but it did detect a fault with the auto box that may have been telling the engine to go into limp mode. When they had fixed the box, it still kept going into limp mode. Are you all suggesting that all may be well now but the engine ECU has not been reset properly because the garage did not have a star machine?
