My existing battery is 340mm long but when I look up replacement batteries for my C180 W202 they are coming up with shorter lengths like 278mm and even 241mm. Will these shorter ones be able to be clamped down or do I need a full length battery; I am not sure how much adjustment there is, if any, on the clamping?

If you look on the battery it should have a size - possibly 019, 096, 072 or similar. Replace with like.

Well yes but the question was really more like 'can the battery tray adapt to shorter batteries?' I can't see any type number on the battery without removing it and I don't want to remove it more than strictly necessary due to risk to modules and things needing resetting.

There is usually a second bolt hole to accept a smaller battery (well there was on my W211)
According to battery supplier Tayna, your car needs an 096 battery which are 278mm long.
Here is a list of their stock with battery size.
