My MY 2000 w202 C180 has done this twice now. Once six weeks ago and again yesterday. Has happened both times while my wife was driving (and no it wasn't her driving!).

While going down a slope foot lightly on bake pedal, the engine cut out and the dashboard lights came on.

Potentially very dangerous situation as little control of steering when this happens.

Both times she restarted the car and went on her way without further incident. The assyst light shows an A service due in 300 miles, other than that no other warnings visible. Have Booked it in with indy for A service and to check out the problem, but am afraid he might not know what issue is as it happens intermittently (twice now in 6-7 weeeks).

Anyone have any ideas?

I would look at an ECU problem or even (lets hope) a crankshaft sensor. The later is less expensive.

First step is to check the codes, it's just guesswork otherwise

They say they found carbon build upin the actuator. Have cleaned it out and should not happen again. Was not there and wll take their word for it. I forgot to ask about codes. Anyone heard of this> What does the actuator do?

I can only think they are referring to a buildup in the throttle body which can cause idle problems. You said that your wife was braking lightly down a slope so it fits. Did you experience any idle fluctuations before the cutout happened?

I wasn't in the car on both occassions, but can't say I notice anything the few times I drive it. She doesn't either. That said it seems to idle a lot smoother since it got back ( but that might just be in my head). I guess the best test is to have her go down the road on which it happened and see if it happens again. The car is very reliable and this has been the only 'blip' in over 3 years of ownership

The throttle body is probably the culprit as you have been told. Sudden cutting out when the revs drop ( as in the circumstances you described) are perfect examples of a gummed up one. Quite a common fault in many cars, My old Golf suffered exactly the same as did my Mum in Laws Lupo. After a good clean up of the throttle body, they seemed like new cars again.
