The electric rear windows on my W202 C220 Diesel have stopped working. The fuse was blown and a replacement fuse blew as I inserted it. Anyone have any ideas what might be the underlying cause?

Another longer term issue is that the EDC light comes on when the engine is started from cold and, correctly, signals a problem with the injection system (ie loss of power and stalling). Restarting a couple of times with high revs clears the problem and the problem can be avoided altogether if one revs the engine for 10 seconds or so on first start. No EDC light and off you go as normal (pretty slowly this being a 220 Diesel).

I purchased the car from a M-B dealer with 45k miles on the clock (it's now done 129k) and there was a problem with the EDC on its first journey which resulted in them replacing the whole injection system under warranty. But it has never really been right (although the car has never let me down). Some time back the EDC light would just come on even though there appeared to be no accompanying problem with the engine. Over the years the starting problem described above has come and gone but I don't think the M-B specialist that I used for servicing for some years ever really understood what was wrong. I now live in the sticks of Norfolk and my competent (I think) and helpful local garage (not a M-B specialist) has no solution.

Apart from going to the local M-B dealer with no certainty of a fix but the likelihood of considerable expense, has anyone any ideas about this?

For the windows, the fact that the fuse blew as you were replacing it (and not when you used the switch) suggests a wiring problem that somehow the fused supply is contacting earth somewhere or could be a switch. Are they illumunated ? If so, they will contain an earth supply and possibly falling part internally which is causing incorrect/cross contacts

If I were you, I'd take out all the rear window switches (including the ones near the driver) and try another fuse. If this doesn't blow* then replace each switch one by one and see which one makes the fuse blow.
*If the fuse blows without the switches in, then it's definetely a crossed wire somewhere between the fuse box and the switches.
