W202 C2ooK Do need to change gearbox fluid

Hi all,

I have one of the very last W202s built, its a C200 Kompressor Sport Estate with the 5 speed Tip auto built in September 2000.

The car has done 45000 miles from new and runs really well.

I have recently started towing a caravan and wondered whether I need to change the auto gearbox fluid due to the extra heat/strain on the gearbox. There is nothing stated in the service schedule and I cant even check the level as there is no dipstick. The local dealer said he can do it for about £180inc filter although he couldn't find any requirement in the schedule either.

I would appreciate any advice on whether I can carry on regardless or need to look further in to the issue.

Many thanks

Nick

It is worth doing given the mileage and the extra strain that you will impose. You'll end up with a smoother and longer last gearbox, which is no bad thing. If you wnat to go the DIY route I'm sure someone will be along soon who knows the W202 better than I and tell you where the drain plugs are for the box and if the Torque converter has one also

It's not on the service schedule but I had the gearbox oil changed on both my W202's at arround that mileage. Sensible precaution.

Hi SeaGS got the same model as you (reg. May 01 not sure of build date) & changed the ATF at 70k . very dirty & marked improvement & I had been hammering it around witha full load & roof box.The price is o.k. think I paid £140 with filter & gen. MB fluid though there is no drain for the torque converter so takes 4.5 litres afaikr Definitely recommended ;the sealed for life is not a guarantee & I think Malcolm has referred to an official MB maintenence bulletin that now confirms this. Look after it, not many around!!
