In the continuing quest to locate the ticking noise heard from inside the car ( and pulsing along the fuel pipes) I found this.

P-B-47.30/42 OCT06 – Pulsation noises from purge line (221.171 without ABC suspension). It may be due to the pulsating flow from the activated charcoal filter to the engine that causes the purge line to vibrate. These vibrations are initiated through mounting points or contact of the line on the body and may be heard as pulsation noises (ticking noises) inside the passenger compartment. A fluid reservoir between the purge valve and the line to the activated charcoal filter will be installed (part # A221 470 04 16).

So, two questions.
1 Does my car ( 1997 W202 C180. ) have an activated charcoal filter fitted. and
2 Where is the activated charcoal filter located and how do i get to it ( ok, so thats 3 questions!

The ticking is loudest under the rear seat, passenger side ( UK) I assume it is somewhere around there?

If you remove the rear (passengers side) wheel and the plastic mud guard you will see it. Its cylindrical and black with two/three pipes attached. and they do become blocked causing the purge valve to work too often.;)

Yeh, my purge valve ticks sometimes too, but it is a continous ticking from that, not in sync with the engine speed ( which my ticking is) If I disconnect the wires to it, the valve quietens down, but not the ticking. If you listen to an injector ( put a long screwdriver on top of the injector and put your ear on the screwdriver,) the ticking/pulsing noise is exactly the same, but that doesnt explain the pulsing fuel lines. When the ticking stops, the pulsing stops. I also get a misfire /hesitant pull away, when its ticking.
Anyway, it looks like I have a charcoal cannister I need to take off the underarch trim and look at it, it looks like that is where the ticking is probably coming from.
Good job I just booked a week off work!
