If the Leather portion on the knob edge is damaged (someone with mole-like finger nails!), does one have to replace the complete gearnob/gaiter as one assembly or can a new gaiter be somhow fitted to the gearbnob?
I don't think you can. I thought about replacing mine a while ago, and queried the cost of a new one with MB. Over a £100, and it doesn't look too straightforward either. It seems to be a one-piece covering for the whole knob/shaft thing. You might be able to cobble something up from accessory shop type replacements, but it probably wouldn't look just right.
