Hi, I am new to the forum as I have just bought a C200Elegance Estate (1999), seems u call it a w202!.Anyhow, first thing to replace is the gear knob as it is disintergrating! BUT the knob and gaiter are ONE piece. Is it easy to change provided I can find one, as e bay shows knobs only?. many thanks and a great forum.

Good morning, Malcolm.

Yes, you are correct with the collet.
However, I believe Norton is referring to a manual 'box.

I don't have any experience with manual gearlevers, Norton.
However, i'm sure there will be some constructive feedback on the subject in due course.

Welcome from me, also.

Hi,
Pull the gaiter free from the trim panel by pulling it from one corner this will release it, pull the gaiter up over the gear knob as far as possible and you will see a collet ring at the bottom of the actual gear knob, turn this through 90 degrees (i think) the gear knob should then be released, it maybe quite hard to remove, a twisting pulling action may make it easier to release it.
